Shape keys are sliders for a mesh's shape. In Object Data Properties ▸ Shape Keys, keep the Basis shape and add variants. Relative shape-key Values are usually blended from 0 to 1; values outside that range can amplify or reverse the deformation. They are useful for switching facial expressions or mouth shapes on one mesh.

In Python, call obj.shape_key_add(name='Basis') and then obj.shape_key_add(name='Stretch'). Each call returns a bpy.types.ShapeKey. Edit the variant's .data coordinates and keyframe its .value. This example creates a single vertical stretch and plays it from 0 to 1. The mesh stores alternate positions for the same vertices rather than a duplicate object.

The Basis and variant must keep matching vertex counts and order for reliable blending. Shape keys suit mesh deformation; use object transforms for whole-object movement or rotation.

When to use

Use it for continuous mesh changes such as facial expressions or lip sync. Separate deformations handled by bones from those handled by shape keys.
