Bump makes a flat surface look touchable by changing its highlights and shading, like drawing light and dark lines on paper. It changes shading normals without moving mesh vertices. In the UI, add it from Shader Editor ▸ Add ▸ Displacement ▸ Bump.

In code, create nodes.new('ShaderNodeBump'), connect a grayscale signal to Height, then connect the Bump Normal output to the Principled BSDF Normal input. Strength controls the effect amount; Distance controls how strongly height changes the apparent slope. Use a Normal Map node for a normal-map image instead.

Bump does not change the silhouette; relief appears only in shading and reflections. Excessive Distance exaggerates the relief and makes it rougher; enable Invert to push it inward — this example lights a flat relief tile from a low angle and compares Strength.

When to use

Use it for fine grain, wrinkles or scratches when the silhouette should stay fixed. Use displacement when the actual shape needs to change.
