Think of BMesh as a workbench where vertices, edges, and faces are objects you can handle directly. It exposes mesh elements and their connections for topology editing. In a Python script, create one with bmesh.new(); read an object mesh with bm.from_mesh(mesh), then write the result back with bm.to_mesh(mesh).

bm.verts, bm.edges, and bm.faces contain BMVert, BMEdge, and BMFace elements. bmesh.ops applies edits such as extrusion and subdivision to this structure. This demo subdivides edges, finds one top vertex through bm.verts, then raises its coordinate directly. For a mesh already in Edit Mode, use the bmesh.from_edit_mesh and bmesh.update_edit_mesh path.

After writing with to_mesh, free a standalone BMesh; it is not automatically synchronized with the original mesh. Directly replacing object.data while Edit Mode owns the mesh can leave data out of sync, so use the access pattern for the current mode. BMesh is useful for detailed topology changes; bpy.data is simpler for ordinary object-property changes.

When to use

Use it to edit selected vertices, edges, and faces from a script or build a custom topology operation. Read and write the object mesh, then free the BMesh.
