If two paper pieces are just slightly misaligned, their edges look doubled. Merge by Distance joins selected vertices that fall within a chosen threshold. In Edit Mode, use Mesh ▸ Clean Up ▸ Merge by Distance, then adjust Merge Distance in the operation panel.

In Python, bmesh.ops.remove_doubles(bm, verts=bm.verts[:], dist=0.07) searches for close vertices in mesh coordinates. This demo joins two cubes separated by a 0.06 gap using a 0.07 threshold. The threshold is a distance in the mesh's units.

A large threshold can erase intentional gaps or small details. The operation merges vertices, so it does not automatically remove overlapping faces or duplicate objects. If object scale has not been applied, the same number can represent a different visible distance, so choose the value for the model's units.

When to use

Use it to weld seams after joining meshes or clean duplicate vertices from imported geometry. Start with a small threshold and check that intended corners stay intact.
