Smooth by Angle keeps a cylinder’s side looking rounded while leaving the top rim crisp. In Blender 5.1, Object ▸ Shade Auto Smooth adds the modifier pinned to the end of the stack. Set its angle in Adjust Last Operation immediately after running the operator, or in the modifier’s Angle field.

This modifier is a Geometry Nodes asset in Essentials rather than a dedicated bpy.types class. In background Python, add it with bpy.ops.object.shade_auto_smooth(use_auto_smooth=True, angle=math.radians(40)). The object must be selected in Object Mode, and calling Shade Smooth or Shade Flat later can remove the modifier.

This changes shading from face normals without changing the silhouette. The demo uses a 12-sided cylinder whose neighboring side normals differ by 30°; the 40° threshold smooths the sides while keeping the 90° top rim sharp.

When to use

Use it to smooth curved shading while preserving crisp corners. It changes shading rather than geometry like Subdivision, and its threshold should fit the model.
