Think of turning a small model on a desk: the 3D Viewport is the main area where you inspect a scene from different angles and work on it directly. In the default Layout workspace, the large editor area is the 3D Viewport; its header holds mode, menu, and display controls, the left toolbar holds tools, and the sidebar holds supporting settings. Drag with the middle mouse button to orbit around the scene, or hold Shift to pan.

The scene itself lives in bpy.data.objects and bpy.context.scene, while the editor display settings belong to SpaceView3D in a VIEW_3D area. For example, a script can add a mesh with bpy.ops.mesh.primitive_monkey_add(location=(-1.35, 0, 1.0)) and choose the render camera with bpy.context.scene.camera. bpy.ops runs an operation that adds an object to the active scene, so it also works for building a background render. To access a 3D Viewport editor, check area.type == 'VIEW_3D'.

Background mode (-b) cannot capture a clickable editor or its overlays. This demo therefore renders real meshes at different depths and sizes to show the 3D space the editor presents, rather than drawing a fake interface. Orbiting and panning change only the view, not the scene data, so they are different from moving the camera.

When to use

Use it as the main work area for modeling, placement, and scene inspection. Changing the view is different from moving an object or camera.
