A point light sends light in every direction from one position, like a bare bulb. The direction and brightness on a surface change with its distance from the source.

A point light spreads in every direction from one position, like a small bulb in a dark room. Move the source or turn an object and each face changes brightness; objects farther away receive less light. In the UI, choose Point under the light data properties' Type setting.
In code, bpy.data.lights.new(name='Point', type='POINT') creates the Light data-block; bpy.data.objects.new(...) wraps it in an object that you link to a scene collection. Set location on that object. This split keeps position and rotation on the object, while energy, color and shadow size live on the light data.
A point light is defined by its position, so it does not produce the parallel rays of sunlight. This render places identical balls at widely separated distances to make the falloff visible; a weak fill light keeps the far ball's shape readable. For softer shadow edges, adjust the source size and shadow settings as well.
When to use
Use it for a nearby, compact source such as a bulb or candle. Choose an area light for a broad, even source, or a sun light for a uniform direction from far away.
