A rubber surface returns its own color broadly, while a metal torus reflects its surroundings with the surface color tinting those reflections. Metallic controls that transition. In the UI, find it at Material Properties ▸ Surface ▸ Principled BSDF ▸ Metallic.

In code, set bsdf.inputs['Metallic'].default_value from 0 to 1. Zero uses the dielectric model seen in glass or plastic; one uses the full metal model, and values between blend the responses. Without an environment such as an HDRI to reflect, the difference is hard to see.

For metals, Base Color tints reflections rather than acting like a colored light. If a metal looks too dark, check its reflected environment and Roughness before lowering Metallic — these renders change only the value on the same coral torus.

When to use

Set whether the material behaves as metal or dielectric. Use Base Color and Coat for painted metal, and Roughness for reflection sharpness.
