Like text seen bent through a glass, Transmission lets light pass through the surface and refract inside it. In the UI, adjust Weight in Material Properties ▸ Surface ▸ Principled BSDF ▸ Transmission.

In code, set bsdf.inputs['Transmission Weight'].default_value from 0 to 1. The IOR socket controls refraction. Cycles gives the most accurate refraction; in EEVEE, set mat.surface_render_method = 'DITHERED' and mat.use_raytrace_refraction = True to enable Raytraced Transmission. The Transmission Weight socket name was introduced in Blender 4.0 and remains the same in 5.x.

Transmission is different from lowering Alpha. Alpha blends surface transparency without bending light; Transmission calculates refraction and reflection. The Cycles renders compare how the colored bars behind the sphere bend and shift as the value changes.

When to use

Use it for glass, water or clear plastic where objects behind the surface should refract. Use Alpha when you need a thin composited surface instead.
