If Object Mode moves a lump of clay, Edit Mode works directly on its surface vertices, edges, and faces. Select a mesh and press Tab to enter it, then choose Vertex, Edge, or Face selection from the header. Multiple objects can be in Edit Mode at once; their mesh data can change while their object transforms stay unchanged.

For scripted topology edits, create an editable mesh with bmesh.new(), then exchange data with Blender’s Mesh using bm.from_mesh(obj.data) and bm.to_mesh(obj.data). Interactive bpy.ops.mesh operations depend on the current edit mode and selection, while bmesh makes it easier to name the elements to change in a background script. This demo moves a cube vertex to change its shape.

Changing obj.location in Object Mode moves the whole mesh, while changing a point in Edit Mode changes mesh coordinates. Edit-mode selection highlights and tool cursors do not appear in a final render. The demo compares the original mesh with the actually edited mesh from the same view.

When to use

Use it to edit the mesh topology directly. Return to Object Mode to move or rotate the whole object.
