An area light emits from a broad surface, like a window or softbox, instead of a point. Light reaches a shadow from many directions, so its edge softens; reflective highlights also spread into the shape of the source. In the UI, choose Type ▸ Area and set Square, Rectangle, Disk or Ellipse.

Create one with bpy.data.lights.new(name='Area', type='AREA'), then set the Light data's shape, size and size_y. size_y sets the second dimension for Rectangle and Ellipse shapes. The object's rotation aims the source, and this demo points it at a single cube.

A larger emitter creates a broader, softer shadow edge. With Normalize enabled, total energy remains consistent while its size changes. This demo keeps the camera and materials fixed and changes only the source size to compare the shadow boundary.

When to use

Use it for broad, soft sources such as a window, softbox or panel. For sharper shadows, use a point light or reduce the area light size.
