Like parts cast from the same mold, linked duplicates share the geometry data used by several objects. Press Alt+D in Object Mode to create one. Editing vertices in Edit Mode changes every linked copy, but each object keeps its own location, rotation, and scale.

With the data API, copy the object and assign the shared block: linked = source.copy() followed by linked.data = source.data. When geometry must be independent, copy the mesh too with unique.data = source.data.copy(). This example edits the shared mesh once and compares the linked pair with a single-user copy.

Meshes are not the only shareable data blocks; materials and actions can also be linked. A vertex edit to shared mesh data affects every user. Copy the data block first when only one object should change.

When to use

Use it for repeated meshes such as screws, tiles, or product parts that need different placements. Choose a regular duplicate when each copy needs unique geometry.
